This was a different approach from the more usual process where an historian/artist works on the content/design and then volunteers are brought into the process to stitch the work. The building the embroiderers were working in was bitterly cold and the canvas had pulled away from the frame, so they had to tension it as they stitched, Figure 3.26. Rosika Parker (1984) wryly noted that ‘decades of skill developed for ecclesiastical banners, altar cloths, drawing-room drapery and smoking caps lie behind the banners.’ 58 Imagery for the suffrage banners was emblematic (in contrast to the figurative tradition of Trade Union and Orange Order banners); with masculine and feminine symbols used side by side to demand ‘equality, not androgyny.’ 59 Signature quilts were a popular means of fund raising in the late C19th; Valerie Wilson documents 17 of these quilts in the Folk Museum collection made as fundraisers with ‘Presbyterians in particular seeming most in need of financial assistance.’ 60 The Primrose League Quilt (see Figure 1.2) is an unusual example of a politically motivated signature quilt; better known is the Holloway Prison Banner (1910) - embroidered with the names of 80 suffragette hunger-strikers.
