They do make prestamped crib cover tops to be embroidered but no quilting lines are included. This will hide and secure the thread with no need to knot it. Desmonds closed their last remaining 8 factories in Northern Ireland in 2002-3. 108 Interview Tina McLaughlin, 16/11/2012, Derry 193 McLaughlin found most of the Traveller women (even the older generation) had no sewing skills but they all ‘wanted a go on the sewing machine’ and ‘you could see the self-esteem they got from learning a skill.’ McLaughlin’s role was to provide materials and help with skills but it was up to the women ‘what they wanted to express.’ They ‘worked from their own instinct’ picked ‘through fabrics and buttons and used whatever took their fancy - whatever spoke to them.’ They ‘chatted away and worked away … put a little bit together … looked at it … they didn’t have to please anyone except themselves.’ The women assembled fabrics into motifs that carried cultural and religious symbolism for them - eyes, gold, warding off evil; the old way of life with washing hanging at the side of the road; their faith and their style.
