Lansdale in his screwed-up version of the Wild West (think "cow-punk" plus a few "Saw" movies) It is one heck of a ride, and it has everything a dime novel should have - mystery, wonder, adventure and crazed horror mixed with deeply dark atmosphere.

Most of the works are romantic Victorian pieces with a sort of alternative history bend: what may have happened if we’d gone with a different type of power, a different type of technology, a different type of culture. Like the other historically based aesthetic sci-fi movements, dieselpunk strives to alter something fundamental about what we know and understand of history. While some of it is quite good there are a great many writers that go steampunk gatherings, take notes, and sell the fantasies of their target audience back to them. And hot off the presses is the news that the Open Eye Figure Theatre in Minneapolis will be presenting “Steampunk Delusions,” from 27 April until 12 May 2012. But the NRA’s idea of a steampunk weapon are undoubtedly different from mine. Although they utilized many of the same tropes and touchstones employed later by twenty-first-century writers of steampunk, in their contemporary hands these devices represented state-of-the-art speculation.
