Since cyberpunk started in the 80's it evolved and transformed science fiction literature. It’s a way of making the SF real, and not veering off into the writing about generic kinds of characters. In many ways, it is like a reversal of the confrontation Gibson described in “The Gernsback Continuum” where people from the present watch the fading of the inhabitants of the World of Tomorrow we recognize from Amazing Stories, Things to Come, and the 1939 World’s Fair. My book is more science fantasy because its dominant setting is fantasy.

It also misses the fact that Grace Jones (whose posthuman representation Ballard admired) had popularized “Warm Leatherette” as the title track of her album of 1980, reinforcing the links between post-punk electronica and certain strains of disco and the sensibilities of the more experimental and frequently Ballardian/Burroughsian punk and No Wave scenes.
