What I think of is something more along the lines of the Metaverse from Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash (the book was truthfully the first thing that came to mind when I read the heading for this section of the class). Including a canon-establishing introduction and excerpts from a hotly-contested online debate, Rewired is the first anthology to define and capture the crackling excitement of the post-cyberpunks. So: Bruce Bethke invented the term cyberpunk but otherwise has no connection to the fiction known as cyberpunk.

This movie focuses on the theme of self identity, where the hero struggles to determine whether he is his true self as Vincent, as he was born, or whether his cover as Jerome can ever really become his 'true' self. But in Cyberpunk 2077, it’s self-defined role-playing: your style and personality will have deep and far-reaching effects on the world and how it reacts to you. “We will have several features that allow you to create your [visual] style, and your style will affect gameplay, storyline and relationships between characters,” explains creative director Sebastian Stepien. “Your appearance and your dress will change the behaviour of NPCs, and also the story also in some parts,” Mateusz adds.

What is significant about the horse that they see? Actually, especially gang members, as gangs are less of crime groups and more of mutual protection societies when the government isn't willing to keep the order and safety (which is how many gangs started anyway in the real world, making this Older Than Feudalism ). Out of all the books I’ve read recently, Trouble and Her Friends by Melissa Scott fit this series the closest. This applies from a classical-definition-of-science-fiction standpoint (it's a book about alien invasions in the future with spaceships and stuff), and from the standpoint of my own definition of science fiction, for reasons that I'll talk about in a paragraph or two.

Emiko is the Windup Girl, a strange and beautiful creature. Major book publishers do not always use “post” and “neo” labels, which is a major reason for the overly broad “dystopian” label that some cyberpunk novels receive. But by 1999 and System Shock 2, we're already diverting into new territory with the increased emphasis on biological modification and the nature of intelligence. Right now I’m working on a young adult novel, still untitled, which—remember the pessimism we were talking about before?—chronicles the life story of three brothers during the collapse of civilization.

But the secrets she died with are about to come back out into the open, and they could change everything. It is believed this change was made in order to accurately depict the aftermath of the 1953 invasion of Earth. Wells' War of the Worlds helped define the "alien invasion" variant of this subgenre.

The least discreet of these is Gibson’s idea of cyberspace. We would appreciate it if you would include a brief, two- to three-sentence bio either in the body of your e-mail message or somewhere within your attached manuscript. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism.

Elysium: The elite live on a high-tech space station with casual cures for cancer, while Earth is a Crapsack World of poverty and squalor kept oppressed with robot police and cyber-enhanced thugs. But Ender's Game uses this plot to great effect. With a pitch like that, and stunning artwork by Joe Benitez, Aspen has a hit on their hands. Nice, which Kim Stanley Robinson called, "the best time travel novel ever written," and, in collaboration with James Patrick Kelly, Freedom Beach.

Elgin’s Native Tongue and The Judas Rose, Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and Fairbairns’ Benefits all posited dystopian futures in which women’s rights had been extinguished altogether, in which women were valued only as breeders, in which the moral majority had ascended to establish tyrannical theocracies, in which technology had become the sophisticated means by which women could be successfully oppressed once again. The cyberpunks have been the most powerful single influence on science fiction over the past two decades, an influence that is explained by their perceptive analysis of the cultural and social changes generated or threatened by "media in transition."
